  There are lots of excellent introductory level books. My list would be: 1) "Modern Control Engineering", by Katsuhiko Ogata. This one is easily readable and can be the most appropriate book for starting to learn from scratch. 2) "Automatic Control. The approach of the book employs powerful methods of machine learning for optimal nonlinear control laws. This machine learning control (MLC) is motivated and detailed in Chapters 1 and 2. In Chapter 3, methods of linear control theory are reviewed. In Chapter 4, MLC is shown to reproduce known optimal control laws for linear dynamics (LQR, LQG).

I suggest some books on control theory: Linear Control K. Ogata: "Modern Control Engineering" - a good introductory textbook. G. Goodwin, S. Grabe and M. Salgado: "Control System Design" - an advanced textbook S. Skogestad and I. Postlethwaite: ". The survey is far from exhaustive.
